A high-intensity training session

Beyond its obvious general, common meaning, the term "training session" is also used at the Academy to refer specifically to a high-intensity function where fourth class cadets are expected to recite knowledge and/or to perform physical training, usually within a squadron. When held in the SAR, these are sometimes referred to as "SAR sessions". In more recent years, they have also been called "beat sessions" or "beatdowns".

Because the fourth class cadets are generally expected to support their classmates, a training session involving only a few fourth class cadets generally grows to include all of the fourth class cadets in a given squadron. Another classic way to start a training session is to gather all of the fourth class cadets together, give them a speech about how they've been screwing up lately, and then invite the upperclass cadets to "fall out and make corrections." The whole thing usually gets rather loud and warm, given the number of cadets participating.
