Toggling

In the late 60s and early 70s, there used to be, a feat of skill performed in Mitchell Hall, called "toggling" (also called "toodling"). If peas happen to be on the menu, a cadet takes one, tilts his (there were no his/her back then) head back, and puts the pea on his closed lips, then begins to propel the pea off the lips by exhaling, almost like whistling, but with no sound, ultimately suspending the pea an inch or two above his lips for a while.

The actual purpose of toggling is unknown. It was most likely a way to get put at rest at a Friday evening meal. I'm sure 3 pea toggling squats would merit an easy meal, just as those who put on skits at the table on a Friday night to sit at rest. Or it may simply have been in the "give a cadet some string....." category.
