Taps Vigil
From USAFA Folklore
A Taps Vigil is a solemn ceremony held by the Cadet Wing following the death of a cadet. The entire Wing assembles silently around the Terrazzo grass a few minutes before Taps. All exterior lighting is extinguished, and curtains are drawn to ensure complete darkness. High Flight is sung, and the Honor Guard executes a rifle salute followed by the playing of echoed Taps. The Wing then reverently sings the Third Verse of the Air Force Song. This type of vigil was also held on the morning after 11 September 2001 to pay respects to the Americans slain in the terrorist attacks.
