In 1969, some brilliant cadet played the song "Hair" (from the musical of the same name) during a haircut inspection.

[edit] Accounts

  • On Fridays at Noon Meal Formation, the AOCs conducted a hats-off haircut inspections of their squadrons. They would walk through the ranks with the Cadet Squadron Commander and Cadet First Sergeant, who took down names of offending cadets. On this particular Friday, it was a beautiful day in the Spring of 1969.
Just as the haircut inspection started, the record Hair ("Give me a head of hair, long beautiful hair...") started playing in the 4th group area only. Evidently, some enterprising cadets had placed a record player in a window overlooking the 4th group area and talked one of the CQs into turning it on at the right time. Anyway, the record played loud for a while and no one appeared to be "bent out of shape" except this Marine AOC who must have thought it was being done in bad taste. The Marine officer runs towards the sound of the music while all the cadets and tourists are laughing and enjoying the moment. A short period after the Marine AOC runs into the dorm, you hear a scratchy sound as he takes the needle off the record. He proceeds to lock the "offending stereo equipment" in his office until he can take appropriate action. Sometime that afternoon, the stereo equipment is "removed" from his office. The Marine AOC puts the word out that this action constitutes theft. However, the word got back to him that the cadets who owned the stereo equipment were just claiming what was rightfully theirs.
  • What actually happened was a member of '69 put his stereo in the squadron trunk room, and had arranged for the FM station in Denver, KLZ, at precisely the right time, to say "...the following song is dedicated to the Air Force Academy Cadet Wing, who at this moment is undergoing a haircut inspection..." then they played "Hair". The officer mentioned in the above account was a Marine LtCol, known as "The Onion", as he shaved his head. The Onion put the stereo in his office; the owner got into the office and reclaimed his stereo. The Onion then turned him in for an honor violation, which didn't stick. - (27 Aug 2001)
  • The way I remember the "Hair"-playing incident was that someone in the duty shack (or whatever the wing OD central was called back then) arranged with KLZ to make the announcement AND play the song over the air, and the Cadet OD patched it in to the PA system. Of course, that was over 30 years ago, and at my age, my memory ain't what it used to be.
