Although the term "Officer in Charge" (OIC) can refer generally to any officer who is responsible for a unit or program, Officer in Charge is also used specifically to a commissioned officer who is serving as the duty officer in the Cadet Area on a given day. Normally the OIC spends the day with the cadet Senior Officer of the Day to observe goings-on in the Cadet Wing, inspect the dormitories, and respond to any significant events.

The Officer in Charge is sometimes referred to variously as "Officer of the Day" or "Duty Officer," but they all mean the same thing.

Fourth class cadets are required to memorize the name and rank of the OIC each day as part of Checkpoints.
