Introductory Flying Training (IFT) is a flying training course which pilot-training-bound cadets or lieutenantss must take prior to starting UPT. It includes about 40 hours of ground school and up to 50 hours of flying training, after which the student takes a written test and checkride to get his private pilot certificate.

IFT has been held on and off at the Academy, in many types of aircraft, including T-41s, T-3s, and DA-20s.

IFT at the Academy was replaced at the end of 2005 by Flight Screening, a 25-hour program which takes students through to solo. Although it does not generate a private pilot certificate, successful completion of FS allows the student to attend Air Force pilot training. IFT in its old form continues at other bases. IFS is nonetheless valuable for those wishing to get a private pilot certificate before attending UPT, as it is not too cost-prohibitive for a cadet to pay out of pocket for the 15 additional flight hours needed for license.
