Gray Leather Gloves (also known as GLGs) were issued before converting to black leather gloves in 1999. Ostensibly, the gloves were intended to be tucked into the sleeves of either the athletic jacket or parka. This was seldom enforced until the tyrannical reign of Hoyt S. Vandenberg Jr.

Sabre-carrying firsties usually removed the liner from at least the right glove in order to be able to perform sabre manual, e.g., Noon Meal Formations and other drill.
