Commandant's Challenge
From USAFA Folklore
Commandant's Challenge is a major Academy training event, started in 2004 as part of a series of progressive training milestones that include Commandant’s Challenge, Pinnacle, and Recognition. The goal of these events is to build teamwork, promote leadership, and create a sense of accomplishment for every cadet. Occurring in the late Fall, Commandant's Challenge is meant to be the culminating military training event for the Fall Semester, testing the cadet wing's operational readiness, leadership skills, physical fitness and drill & ceremonies. Most recently, a large portion of Commandant's Challenge was designed to give cadets an opportunity to lead under pressure and unexpected situations.
Major portions of the Commandant's Challenge have included:
- FTX - Conducted in Jack's Valley, the FTX tests cadets on wartime skills, including self-aid & buddy care, convoy operations, chemical warfare, bare base set up, and land navigation.
- PT challenge - Designed to test the cadets' physical fitness and teamwork. A recent course consisted of one-mile running intervals mixed with push-ups, sit-ups and sprints.
- Cadets also participated in marching drill, room and uniform inspections, military knowledge tests and a culmination parade.
