The position of attention is used in formations and at certain other times when the highest level of military bearing is expected. The position of attention has two varieties at the Academy: one for fourth class cadets/basic cadets and one for everybody else.

[edit] General position

Attention for all cadets means:

  • Stand with heels together, feet at a 45-degree angle
  • Hands at sides, with thumb along the crease of the trousers
  • Don't talk, eyes forward, maintain military bearing

This is generally used in formation or when reporting in to a superior.

[edit] Fourth class cadets

Fourth class cadets/basic cadets are expected to assume an exaggerated position of attention (sometimes called the Brace) when training:

Fourth class cadets are at attention on the Terrazzo, in Mitchell Hall, and in Sijan Hall or Vandenberg Hall (other than in cadet rooms or bathrooms).
