At ease

At ease is a position of military bearing less strict than attention but more restrictive than at rest. When in formation, "at ease" is a somewhat relaxed position, that does not allow talking and requires the cadet to keep his right foot planted, to maintain his position in the formation.

For fourth class cadets, being "at ease" means they may move freely, but are not allowed to talk. They must still greet all officers and upperclass cadets, and extend all proper customs and courtesies. Fourth class cadets are at ease in the mailroom, on the Terrazzo level of Fairchild Hall, and in bathrooms and (sometimes) in common rooms in the dormitories.
