The 94th Flying Training Squadron is responsible for teaching cadets the fundamentals of airmanship through their Soar-for-All program, where cadet instructor pilots teach cadet students to pilot a sailplane (glider). Most cadets who participate in the program have the opportunity to solo the glider, even if they have had no prior flight experience.

The squadron also has two advanced programs teams, the Cross Country team and the Aerobatic Demonstration team. Advanced cadet instructor pilots have the opportunity to join these teams to enrich their flying experience and improve their flying proficiency, while representing the Air Force Academy as professional aviators.

Soaring used to be a cadet club but was formally made an official training squadron at some point in the Academy's history.

This squadron was also the home of the T-41 Introductory Flying Training program for many years. Some instructor pilots were permanently assigned, but faculty and staff members augmented the instructor pilot force. When the 34th Operations Group was replaced by the 306th Flying Training Group, the T-41s moved into the new 557th Flying Training Squadron.
